sermonette: Offerings Still Relevant

Richard T. Ritenbaugh
Given 28-Mar-21; Sermon #1590s-am; 17 minutes

Description: (hide)

The nouns sacrifice and offering have nuanced differences; sacrifice emphasizes the cost while offering emphasizes the giving of something freely. Jesus Christ's sacrifice of His life was both a sacrifice (fulfilling the law, which requires the shedding of blood for expiation from sin) and an offering (freely given). The apostle Paul compared his life to a "drink offering" (Philippians 2:17, 2:4:6). The apostle Peter describes God's people as spiritual and living sacrifices (I Peter 2:4-5, Romans 12:1). If God's people want to be like Christ, they must give of themselves as living sacrifices, with the annual monetary offerings reflecting inner attitudes toward God.
